I opened up a letter commenting on my recent Right-Minded, But Left of Center columns in the Highland Journal. The letter writer had the following to say about my being pleased that the gay marriage issue would once more be on the ballot. " I'm sure you're happy that gay marriage is back on the ballot. Maybe you will get a little different perespective by reading the Op-ed column of your own paper(2/9/12). How many times do the people of Maine have to say NO on this issue. No state has voted Yes on this issue anywhere. Only state legislatures that forced it down the throats of the voters. Even President O-man is not in favor of this proposal.
I will continue to read your column because I believe you have a right to say anything you want, whether it's ridiculous or not."
I pondered the writer's argument for a bit and then was immediately grateful for his email. Why? Because he gave me a great column idea that took ten minutes to write. Simply put, the reason things like gay marriage, etc. return to the ballot or legislative arena time after time is because the human race and the way it perceives social issues is dynamic. Think about drunk drivers, smoking, civil rights, suffrage, etc. Every one of them is addressed differently today than they were 50 years ago because people think differently now. That's a natural social flow. It will be interesting to see how the writer responds. If nothing else comes of it, I got a dandy column from his feedback and that's cool.
